Is Your Gas Furnace Safe?

A gas furnace that is not operating at peak performance can be costly to run and can result in unsafe levels of carbon monoxide—an odorless, colorless byproduct of all gas furnaces that can cause flu-like symptoms, disorientation, confusion, and even death.
It is highly recommended that you have your furnace cleaned and checked every year—the older the furnace, the more important this service is. Newer gas furnaces are equipped with many features that shut the furnace off when a problem is detected. However, older furnaces have no such devices. Over time, furnaces can develop small cracks in the combustion chamber that may not be visible to the naked eye. It is through these cracks that carbon monoxide can leak into your home.

Safety Tip
For year-round protection from the potentially deadly effects of carbon monoxide poisoning, the professionals at Welter Heating recommend you install a carbon monoxide detector near your sleeping area and a second near the furnace area. At least one of these carbon monoxide detectors should be battery powered.
Fall and winter months also see many residents warming their cars prior to driving—often in the garage or immediately outside the garage with the garage door open. These are dangerous practices and can put lethal amounts of carbon monoxide inside your home in a matter of minutes.

Dust Off Your Furnace For Winter
The days are getting shorter, the sunlight hours are becoming fewer, and bathing suits and beach balls have been replaced with schoolbooks and pencils. That can only signal one thing: It’s time once again to dust off your home heating system. Follow these helpful home-heating tips to prepare for the upcoming Minnesota fall and winter:
1. Contact your home heating company for a routine maintenance and inspection of your home heating system. They can ensure your furnace is in good working order and operating as efficiently as possible to save you money in the long run.
2. Replace your furnace filter. If possible, swap a standard filter with a reusable one that can be cleaned and used again. Reusable filters can help the furnace operate more efficiently and therefore reduce heating costs.
3. Clean the heating ducts. Hire a company to remove any potentially harmful mold or mildew that may have accumulated since last winter. This not only ensures your family is breathing in clean air, but also helps improve the efficiency of your furnace system.
4. Make sure your heating vents are not blocked by furniture. That way, the heat will be distributed evenly throughout your home.
5. Have your chimney inspected and cleaned. You will increase furnace efficiency and ensure carbon monoxide can escape safely.
6. Reverse the direction of your ceiling fan blades. Air blowing downward can make a room feel cooler in the summer. So during winter and fall, reverse the direction of the blades to push warm air down into the room.
7. Consider whether it’s time to update your home heating system. Older heating systems can be much less efficient than models today. Set-back thermostats can improve furnace efficiency even more by allowing you to automatically turn down the heat when you are not at home.
Consult an experienced heating company for additional home heating tips to get your furnace ready for winter.
